Chapter Thirteen

As ‘Chris’ I really don’t have a strenuous Gym class on Wednesday. Coach Donovan was letting me have a bit of fun as I was in the ‘pole room’ of the Obstacle course. It’s called the pole room because it is nothing but upright poles just big enough to have just one or at most two feet on it at a time. You start out at the bottom of the room and start walking or hopping from pole to pole as you work your way around and up the poles to the top where you get out. As you get more advanced they add loud horns, darkness and blinding strobe lights to the mix. Oh yes, it does hurt if you fall and hit the ground; sometimes a lot.

I was nearing the top and feeling pretty darn good when… the wind gusted and then the freezing rain hit. The poles and especially the tops of them were ice covered within seconds. I threw a glare at the observation window and Agent Brown gave me a wave and a grin in return. I had made it all the way to this point without using any overt abilities, just passive ones like preternatural balance and enhanced vision in the infra-red range. With everything suddenly froze over I needed to switch up. A shift up the spectrum and I was now seeing in Ultra-violet and I needed something with a bit more grip… or maybe less grip. I wasn’t sure, if the wind kept up I was going to need more mass to compensate for its effects on me.

In any case I was wasting time and time was points. There were three more posts to the finish line, so I gathered myself and… Jumped, slid off the pole and went crashing down to the ground. Reducing my weight to mere ounces I pulled myself up hand over hand to the top of the pole and aimed for the area near the top and did the same thing. I lost points for not making a good jump, didn’t lose points for hitting the ground and made points by completing the obstacle under hazardous conditions. Yea me!

Next was the desert room, I entered and searched for the hidden door, the door could be along the far wall or actually under the sand. It was a variable between overwhelming heat or the dark of a sandstorm blowing sand everywhere. I think Agent Brown was playing with me, the sadistic… Censored. On the other hand unless there had been major work over the Holidays I knew where every door was in this room. Five minutes later I knew that the whole room had been rebuilt. I gave up and used an ability I had been saving for an emergency. I dived beneath the sand and I knew precisely within ten seconds where the door was. I ‘Swam’, (at least that’s how I thought of it), through the sand and popped up next to the door and I was on my way!

The last obstacle room for the day was the ring room.
